One 6 Three is a hidden neighborhood pizza joint with some of the best wood fired pizza in New Haven, an incredibly talented and friendly staff, and outdoor seating.
This project was inspired by the dead tree stump in the curb strip adorned with “neighborhood herb garden” and “dog parking” signs.
We worked with the owner to carve the stump into a standing curb-side bar table and expanded the raised beds. The goal was to create a welcoming environment, provide shade and separation from the busy corner of Willow and Foster.
In 2024, the two raised beds closest to Willow Street contained a New England wildflower mix from American Meadows, a variety of sunflowers, zinnias, snap dragons, and three kinds of morning glory along the posts.
The other two boxes included 3 varieties of basil and tomatoes, marigolds, nasturtium, and a canopy of moon flowers over the dining area.
The window boxes for the kitchen had cascading nasturtium, thyme, and marjoram.

This raised bed is made from a Red Oak that fell gently in the woods between property lines during a storm in 2022 not far from where A.C. Gilbert’s original hunting cabin was located in Hamden, CT. Read more about A.C. Gilbert’s hunting preserve for his friends and co-workers here.
Milled with an Alaskan chainsaw mill, the 2-inch thick slabs dried outdoors for 2 years (1 year for each inch thickness). They were lightly sanded and painted with BEHR “un-mellow yellow” to match the branding of Lawrence Street Plaza pilot in September 2024, the colorful facade of nearby MEZCAL and Upper State Street aesthetic. You can still see and feel the chainsaw mill lines.
Filled with wet logs from Next Door pizza, sticks and leaves from Mechanic Street, compost, and a variety of organic and recycled material. Planted with daffodils, tulips, and native asters (Fall 2024)
